5 Tips for Choosing Your Doylestown Maternity Session Dress!

Have you booked your Doylestown maternity session and are now struggling with what to wear? I hear this time and time again from both moms and moms-to-be! And let’s face it, when you are pregnant, the last thing you have energy for is dress shopping! This is why, years ago, I invested in a curated client wardrobe to offer timeless and elegant options for my clients, saving them the hassle and money! Whether or not the photographer you are working with has a client wardrobe, I will give you tips for narrowing down your selection to find the perfect piece to showcase your cute baby bump!

5 Tips for Choosing Your Perfect Doylestown Maternity Session Dress!

Tip #1: Know Your Style

Do you prefer relaxed, elegant, timeless, romantic? Understanding your vision and the style you gravitate towards can really help narrow down the options. For instance, if you are going for a modern and chic look, a tight-fitted black dress or maybe even jeans and an open blazer (nude underneath for your belly to be visible) may be a more fitting direction. If romantic and ethereal seem to be your vision, a pretty floral dress or custom-made dress with tulle may be the best option for you. Having a grasp on your vision and style is always the best place to start before wardrobe selections!

Tip #2: Take Your Doylestown Maternity Session Location Into Consideration

Is your session being held in the studio or outdoors? If the session is in the studio, you have a bit more wiggle room as you are not competing with Mother Nature (think colder or warmer temps vs. the comfort of the indoor AC or heat). If you are being photographed outside, there is a color rule I always like to follow. It is very simple – avoid green.

The last thing you want to do when being photographed in a sea of green landscapes is also to wear green and camouflage right in! I recommend my clients avoid all shades of green when photographing at a location with a lot of greenery.  Colors that tend to stand out and coordinate best with the green outdoors tend to be shades of white/cream or patterned dresses of pink or muted blues.

Tip #3: What Fit Do You Like?

Decide which fit you prefer. Do you like a dress that has a lot of flow, or do you prefer something a bit more fitted? For Maternity sessions, don’t be turned off by a dress that has a bit of flow to it. If your photographer is experienced, he/she will know how to pose you properly so that even with a flowy dress, your bump will still be the star of the show. In fact, most of my clients wear dresses that have flow and are not tight-fitting.

Tip #4: Where to Shop

My most asked wardrobe question!! Where is the best place to go when shopping for a maternity dress? I have a handful of online stores that I recommend when shopping on your own, or if you are a client of mine, you have access to all of the dresses in my studio wardrobe. Some shops I recommend are Worth Collective, Baltic Born, Nothing Fits But, Show Me Your Mumu, Christy Dawn, Morning Lavender, and Doen, just to name a few. Many of these shops even have a bump-friendly category, making narrowing your search even easier!

Tip #5: Do Something for YOU

Don’t be afraid to step out of your element. Now is the time! Do something for yourself and create the shoot that you’ve always dreamt of. And most of all, embrace your body and all that it’s doing to grow that sweet baby of yours! You are beautiful, Mama!
