Being in the newborn industry for 7+ years, there is one thing within my business that has not changed. That one thing is safety. Safety is SO important when it comes to newborn photography. This may seem like a no-brainer, but unfortunately, it’s not. Over the years, I have seen so many photographers posing babies in an unsafe fashion – probably the worst that I saw was a baby in a glass bowl….you read that right – GLASS. I still can’t get that image out of my head! Prior to starting a photography business, I was a Registered Nurse. Having medical knowledge has definitely carried over into my business especially since I work with newborn. I think this is one of the reasons why I stress safety so much.
For me, newborn portraits serve the purpose to freeze a moment in time as well as to provide families with beautiful memories during one of the most precious times of their life. Placing babies in fancy props or poses is NOT the purpose. You can still get amazing portraits while taking the baby’s lead or letting poses come organically. Don’t get me wrong, posing babies is absolutely safe as long as you are working with a professional photographer who has been trained in newborn posing. While I do pose babies, I try to do in a natural way. Photographing a baby in an unnatural way is just not the art I wish to produce. Newborn photography is a saturated market with many different styles. My advice to those who may be searching for a newborn photographer is to first, find a photographer who makes safety as a priority and second, find one that you are drawn to their style and love their art. Having these two things in mind while searching for a photographer, will help you narrow down your choices, allowing you to pick the best one suited for you! 🙂
