Alright Mamas, lets talk family photos! Being a Mom myself, I know one main goal when getting portraits done, is that our baby/toddler/kids cooperate! Having your family portraits done is something you may have been looking forward to for months and the last thing you want is a grumpy toddler who wants nothing to do with the camera. I totally get it! So, I have decided to put together 5 tips to help create a stress free family photography session (at sunset) for you and your family.
-
Nap time! Since your session will be at sunset, this may be nearing the time your child typically goes to bed. If they are still taking naps, a later nap may help stretch them to the later bedtime. If they no longer take naps, a rest time in the afternoon may be enough to refuel them!
-
Early dinner. Sometimes sessions can overlap with dinnertime depending on the sunset time. Don’t skip dinner! Plan for an early dinner and make sure bellies are full. Kids who are hungry never make for happy subjects (this goes for adults too! 😉 )
-
Time Buffer. Leave yourself more than enough time to get ready. I know well how difficult it is to get everyone ready and out the door. Build in a buffer so you have more than enough time. Not only does this give you extra time, but it helps eliminate the stress that comes with running late!
-
Snacks. Even with a fully belly, it can be helpful to have some snack on hand during the session. With little ones, a quick refuel during the session can be all it takes to get them to cooperate and make for a smooth session.
-
PJs. Bring the kids’ pjs to change into after the session. This makes your life easier when you are headed home past their bedtime. One less thing for you to do when you get home!
Kids can be unpredictable but these 5 tips can help eliminate some scenarios that make for grumpy kids! I hope you find this helpful as you prepare for your family photography session!
